What should i do during a panic attack?
Matthew's reply: Hi Martin, as soon as you feel a panic attack starting try to focus on your breathing - taking long, slow, smooth, deep breaths will re-balance your nervous system and calm you down. I realize this may seem easier said than done when your heart is racing and you feel panicky, but if you keep doing it your heart will eventually stop pounding and the feeling will eventually go away.
Please take a look at the breathing techniques in the Anxiety-Stress section of this site. They are very effective and can help when you have a panic attack AND when you don't have one. Note: THIS is the key - doing deep breathing exercises when you DON'T have a panic attack, to hopefully PREVENT further attacks.
So, take a look at those breathing exercises (and acupressure techniques) and start doing the ones that seem most suitable for your particular situation. Do them daily and don't wait for your next panic attack to start them! If you have any questions please post them - I'd be happy to help you more if I can.
All the best.
