Has All The McDonald's Restaurants Affected The Obesity Rate In China?

by Shannon Macri
(Meriden,Connecticut)

Now with China allowing all the McDonald's restaurants in their country and becoming so popular, has it had any impact on the obesity rate there like it has in the USA? I just saw another news special about the popularity in China with McDonald's. So many obese people here!!!! McDonald's is everywhere where I live.
So glad your blog is still around! I read that most Chinese schools are now forcing the kids to perform traditional Chinese dance for more exercise due to the obesity rate jumping over 5% more in the past 6 years. Is this true or hype?

Matthew's reply: Shannon, good to hear from you again. The site and I are still very much here! McDonald's, as well as KFC, Pizza Hut and others have been in China for many years. They are extremely popular especially with kids, teenagers and uni students. The obesity rate is apparently climbing, I think due to changes in diet and a more sedentary lifestyle. City people now rarely ride bikes and instead take trains, buses or have cars. They always seem to be tired too and say that they work so hard and have a lot of pressure at work and raising a family. Still, though, despite the huge number of people here I do not see lots of obese people. I see far more back home in Australia! I have touched on this topic in another post relating to Chinese diet. As for dance classes I haven't seen that but I know many school kids here start the day with exercises out in the yard.

All the best,

Matthew

Shannon again:

I'm So Worried. I live in Connecticut,USA and I can't believe how obese people have become. It really does scare me to know that children, teens and adults are so out of shape. We have all these well equipped gyms and many health food markets but it seems not to help at all. More people are even going to McDonald's for breakfast! It's like people are so addicted to fast food.

I live in a town of over 50,000 residents and I'm amazed at the amount of restaurants we have. We have too much food! It's so rare to see a very fit person anymore. I walked into my local gym last week and 60% of the members were very overweight! I was stunned at the level of obesity there. At a gym? Wow.

When is society going to finally understand that the average person is literally killing themselves slowly? They're eating themselves to an early grave. Sometimes I wish I was living in a country where no such thing as junk food or fast food ever existed. Even the Chinese buffets that were once serving very authentic foods are now offering greasy, fried and batter dipped cuisine along with pizza and fries!

I feel I'm the only person in my town that lives on fruits, vegetables, grains and beans. Thank God for web sites like this one! I've shared your site with well over 75 of my online and offline friends. I sure hope they stopped by and learned something.

Breathing Exercise for Losing Weight?

by Margaretha
(Spain)

Hi, I have heard there is a Chinese breathing exercise one can do before every meal (5 times a day) that helps you lose weight. Do you know about this exercise and if so could you please explain how it is done? Regards, Margaretha

Hi Margaretha, it's hard to know which particular exercise you're referring to, however there's one on this site called the Ab Lift that can help you. It is not exactly a breathing exercises but there is a specific breathing method involved. Doing this exercise along with a form of cardio exercise to get your heart pumping, plus following a suitable diet, will help you lose excess weight. If you have any questions or comments about the Ab Lift just post them below.

All the best,

Matthew
