L5-S1 Lower Back Pain

by Barbara
(United States)

Hi, I have L-5 and S-1 moderate to severe arthropathy on the right side more than left. What Chinese holistic approaches do you suggest to get rid of the pain as I am tired of using pain meds. Thank you.

Matthew's reply: Hi Barbara, I have an L5-S1 problem myself and find the following exercises and techniques in the Back-Neck section particularly useful:

Lumbar Rub (using Tiger Balm or similar)

Back Arch

Back Twist

Squat, Sit and Stretch Your Back (Exercises 4 & 5)

There are others in the section that may also help. If you haven't already, take a look at all the exercises and techniques in that section and choose 1 or 2 that you feel best match your problem.

ALWAYS start slowly and gently and NEVER force an exercise! Also warm up your whole body first for 10-15 minutes with something like walking, exercise bike, treadmill or similar. You may even want to check with your physician before trying any of the exercises, just to be sure you don't aggravate the problem!

If you find some of the individual exercises do help you then I suggest you take a look at The Chinese Long Life Exercise Program. It's an easy-to-do, balanced program focusing on vital areas such as the back, legs, abs and waist. Users report more energy, strength and better health overall.

Please let me know how you get on, and also if you have any questions about any of the exercises or techniques on the site or in the program.

All the best,

Matthew
