Exercises For Improving Eyesight

by Jeevarani
(South Africa)

Hi Matthew,

Thank you for the enlightening information available on this website. Please may i ask about the above problem. Is there anything that can assist with eye problems for adults over 60 years old?

Many thanks,

Jeevarani

Matthew's reply: Hi Jeevarani, thanks for your comment about the site. You may have already seen in the Face section there are a number of eye exercises. These are basically self-massage techniques and they are very useful for stopping sore, tired eyes due to excess reading, colds, flu, headaches, etc.

If you do them daily you can prevent sore, tired eyes too, especially if you need to use your eyes a lot in work or other situations. Here in China it is common for students to do eye exercises daily in class to prevent eye strain from studying.

However, I cannot say if these eye exercises will improve eyesight in your particular case. They are safe and easy to do though so I would definitely give them a try.

Another option for improving eyesight is Chinese herbal medicine which can address certain imbalances leading to poor eyesight.

Feel free to post any further questions or comments about improving eyesight.

Chronic Eye Problem - Blepharitis

by LTH
(New York)

Hi Matthew, Do you have any suggestions for chronic blepharitis? I developed it a few months ago and it is not improving in spite of hot compresses, antibiotic drops etc.

Matthew's reply: Hi, in Chinese medicine blepharitis (inflammation of the outer edges of the eyelids) is often diet-related. Overeating of hot and spicy, or fried and greasy foods generates heat in your digestive system, which in time can transfer to other areas - in your case your eyes, causing such problems as blepharitis. Alcohol and coffee also heat up your system and can contribute to eye inflammation.

There are other causes but faulty diet is the main one. Even if you believe your diet is not the cause you should still try Chinese herbal medicine. Antibiotics are clearly not the solution, so stop taking them. There are many Chinese medicine doctors in New York. I recommend you see one to get a Chinese medical diagnosis and treatment. In the Articles section of this site there is a Chinese Diet Report outlining the Chinese way of health through food.

If you have questions or comments about diet or Chinese medicine for blepharitis just post them below.

All the best,

Matthew

Exercises for Facial Twitching?

by Anonymous

I have had a life long facial twitch that has increased as I got older. This twitch causes me to bite my lip hard and my face twitches as well. I have just had dental work which included a temporary bridge until the healing is complete for the permanent one to be placed.

During this time I have broken one from biting too hard so far and I can't seem to stop biting in that area ( front tooth bridge). I was recently on some medication to slow it down a bit. But the medication causes anxiety attacks and I feel tired all the time. My question is are there any Chinese therapeutic exercises that can be done to begin to get control of the muscles in the face? I want to stay off meds.

Matthew's reply: Hi, it's difficult to recommend anything for facial twitching without knowing more about your particular condition and without being able to see you.

While acupressure on specific points on the face may help relieve facial twitching, acupuncture and/or Chinese herbal medicine will be better as they will address the underlying cause which, in Traditional Chinese Medicine, is usually a liver imbalance.

Have you tried acupuncture or Chinese medicine before? If not I suggest you arrange a face to face consultation with a practitioner of traditional Chinese acupuncture or Chinese herbal medicine. He/she will diagnose your condition according to traditional Chinese medical principles and also let you know which treatment(s) will be best for you.

If you have questions about acupuncture or Chinese herbal medicine I'd be happy to help.

All the best.

Double Chin Exercises

by Lily
(California)

Can these stretches/exercises potentially cause sagging skin or wrinkles from stretching and holding your face in an expression? If not, can you explain why? I ask this because I already suffer from the aforementioned and I am really hoping this is not the case because I do not wish to opt for corrective surgery.

Some of the exercises require unnatural poses e.g. pulling your lower lip on your upper one for the double chin stretch. Your help and honesty will be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much in advance!

By the way: I am Caucasian if that is any help in answering my question (because of our skin aging).

Matthew's reply: Hi Lily, the double chin exercises won't cause more wrinkles or sagging skin, as you should have a relaxed face while doing them, and not be holding any expression.

Yes, putting your bottom lip on your top one is not a natural position but it makes the chin stretch more effective. Try it with your lips together in their normal position and it does feel like less of a stretch as you do the exercise.

I would be more worried about having surgery than doing these double chin exercises.

All the best,

Matthew
