Elevated Liver Enzymes

by Diane
(Canada)

Do you have any information on what would cause elevated liver enzymes and recommendations on how to improve liver function? Thank you.

Matthew's reply: Hi Diane, I assume you've had a liver function test. The treatment depends on the cause - elevated liver enzymes can be caused by alcohol, obesity, hepatitis, diabetes, side effects of certain medications, excessive use of some herbal supplements, liver tumors and other factors.

There are many traditional Chinese medicines aimed at regulating and improving liver function. To know which is best for you though, I suggest you consult face to face with a qualified Chinese medicine practitioner. He/she will also be able to offer specific dietary and lifestyle advice.

Generally speaking, in traditional Chinese medicine, things to avoid if you have liver problems, include emotional stress, excessive anger and frustration, alcohol, coffee, drugs, and fried/fatty foods. Once again, a Chinese medicine practitioner will be able to give you specific suggestions according to your particular condition. All the best.
