Sugar, 146 Reasons Not To Eat It

The Problem

Avoiding sugar is hard. It's in so many foods and drinks and it comes in many, often deceptive, forms. It is added to most processed foods including sodas, shakes, cereals, salad dressings, sauces, breads, pastries, biscuits, cakes, ketchup, peanut butter and many other foods. Unless you prepare all your food and drinks at home, sugar is very hard to avoid completely. This is the problem - most people eat way too much of the stuff, often without realizing, simply because it is added to so many things. Many of the foods listed above contain little nutrition and they contribute to all sorts of health problems - obesity, hypoglycemia, diabetes, heart disease, cancer and other illnesses. Sugar also feeds infections and it is addictive.

Fruit Sugar

Even fruit sugars are not healthy. Fruit, unfortunately, is no longer a truly healthful food. Many fruits are hybridized for longer shelf life and disease resistance but not for better nutrition. Fruit is also heavily sprayed with pesticides, which end up in your body. Fruit does contain some nutrients and fibre but you'll get more benefit from eating more cooked vegetables than eating more fruit. If you really must eat fruit, avoid the really sweet, tropical ones like pineapple and mango and instead eat a few organic berries or an organic apple or pear.

Sugar Names

All of the below are various names for sugar that you will see on product labels. They are all basically sugar and have the same effects as sugar: Barley malt, corn syrup solids, high fructose corn syrup, buttered syrup, malt syrup, golden syrup, sorghum syrup, carob syrup, fruit juice, fruit juice concentrate, honey, beet sugar, date sugar, brown sugar, yellow sugar, cane sugar, grape sugar, raw sugar, refiners sugar, golden sugar, dextran, glucose, fructose, maltose, sucrose, cane-juice crystals, maltodextrin, mannitol, honey, molasses, sorbitol, ethyl maltol and others.
