How To Stop Pain

You may know I first got into Chinese medicine because of lower back pain. That was in 1986 when I was 21.

I hurt my back lifting a box and what I first thought was a simple muscle strain turned out to be a problem with my L5 lumbar vertebra.

It's a problem that will always be there but I have learned to manage it through exercise (mostly traditional Chinese exercises) and avoiding stuff like heavy lifting and sitting for too long.

Occasionally though my back plays up and I need help. Last week my back and my right leg and foot started aching. I haven't had leg pain since I first hurt my back and I knew it meant a flaring up of my back problem.

The solution? Acupuncture.

I've had 3 acupuncture treatments in the past 7 days at a local hospital here in China. The first 2 didn't do much but the day after the 3rd treatment my back was pretty much back to normal, i.e. pain free. I'll probably go in for 1 or 2 more treatments to consolidate the effect.

My tip for you this week is to try acupuncture for all kinds of pain. Even if you have a problem like mine that will always be there, acupuncture can ease your pain and discomfort and help you live a more comfortable life.

The effectiveness of acupuncture is well documented. If you happen to not believe in it for some reason, ask yourself why so many Western doctors now do acupuncture. There are thousands of them!

I do suggest though that you see an acupuncturist who has a 4 or 5 year university degree in acupuncture, not someone who has done a short, one or two month course.
