Alcohol and Chinese Medicine

Today is the first really cold day of winter here in southern China. My hands and feet are numb and my joints are stiff. I'm not much of a whiskey drinker but I wouldn't mind sipping some right now as I sit and type.

Alcohol, according to traditional Chinese medicine, quickens the flow of blood and improves your circulation. Chinese doctors, therefore, believe drinking small amounts of alcohol, particularly in winter, is healthy. This is especially true for elderly people who tend to have circulatory problems.

Alcohol by nature is hot though. Too much and you can easily overheat your system, especially in summer. Signs of excess heat in the body include red eyes, flushed face, skin rashes, thirst, constipation, a red tongue and a fast pulse.

Alcohol combined with hot-natured foods such as curries, chillies and anything fried can heat up your system even further.

Moderation and balance is the key - not just with alcohol but in all areas of your life. This is common sense advice, I know, but we all know how easy it is to over indulge at times.

If you're a regular alcohol drinker and/or you often eat hot type foods and you experience some of the heat signs mentioned above, you need to re-establish balance by consuming more cooling foods and drinks such as fruit and vegetables and their juices.
